Haunted Lighthouses – Presque Isle Lighthouse, Michigan

Located on land on the eastern shore of Lake Huron, Michigan, is the Presque Isle Lighthouse. Presque Isle's name comes from the French word which means "almost an island." Congress opened $ 7000 to fund the construction of the lighthouse in 1838 and construction began shortly thereafter. The lighthouse was completed in 1840.

Presque Isle Lighthouse The original tower was 30 feet high with walls four feet thick at the base. Within a stone staircase with hand carved spiral around the inner wall of the tower of the lantern. Approximately 30 feet of a residence separate single story lighthouse lighthouse was built. The light was lit for the first time in September 1840, when the first owner moved in.

In 1866, the owner of the house was in such poor condition that nothing less than a complete overhaul of the structure would be habitable again. The owner has requested that the money available for construction and rennovation of Congress approved credit application on March 2, 1867.

As the construction was to begin, the Council amended its flagship direction. Due to the height of the position of the lighthouse tower is functional only in the light of the port. The new lighthouse was completed in 1871 and the lighthouse keeper and his family moved to the new location. The new light was lit on June 1, 1871 and the lens and the lantern, the light had been removed and sent for use in other locations. After the torch was removed, the old tower on the left and uncapped windows and doors were aboard underway. The buildings are empty and in disrepair for 26 years.

Finally, in 1897, the lighthouse and its environs are the property sold at public auction. Once again on Saturday, the buildings in disrepair for years, and is mainly used as a picnic area for customers of a nearby hotel.

When the property was purchased new in 1930 the new owners rebuilt housing Conservative, in the style of an old English cottage and use it for a summer residence. In the 1940s, began request for vacation travel from the old light station and the owner realized that converting the building into a museum he can make some money. The old tower has been renewed, washed cement between the stones were replaced, and a new coat of white paint was applied.

The station finally electricity in 1965, and the light was reactivated in the tower. The Coast Guard does not allow it to be used as a flagship, however, so the first turn off the light again.

In 1977, a retired couple, Lorraine Parris and George took over the property to live in the guides and guards. George was a man of personality who enjoyed his work and loved to greet visitors to the lighthouse beacon, especially for children. He liked to visitors to the lighthouse on a tour of buildings and grounds and share the life stories of lighthouse and their families. Unfortunately, George died of a heart attack on January 2 1992.

Lorraine remained and continued their work on the tower. One night on their way back to the light of the station, saw a light in the old lighthouse. Knowing that was impossible, because George had disconnected the electricity to the tower of years ago, was a little frazzled.

La Guardia Coastal said it was illegal to display a light in the old tower, from Wednesday might be confused with the New Presque Lighthouse. To ensure that no accident is caused by lighting Coast Guard has removed the gear so that the target can no longer rotate. It is impossible to find a reasonable explanation of why the light was there.

Soon other people began to bring light into the old tower. National Guard pilots said they had seen when it flew night missions over the peninsula. There are also George reported that the light of the director of human security dark, stormy, foggy nights. To date, the light is always at dusk and goes to light. U.S. Coast Guard classified as "unidentified" light.

In July 1992, reported seeing a girl to a man at the top of the ladder leads to the lantern room. The girl said it was a great man with white hair, beard and wore glasses. When showed a picture of George, she says she is the man he saw in the tower, but was "bright white" when she saw it. Another story, perhaps a different version of the same story, reports that the girl tourism lighthouse with his family, climbed on top of the tower and came back laughing. She said she had spoken to the man in the tower.

The lighthouse was added to the Register National Historic Sites in 1973. The area was incorporated into the park by the State of Michigan and has donated to the municipality in 1995. The town's Historical Society continues to operate the lighthouse as a museum opened its doors in September days a week from May to October.
